September is National Hispanic Heritage Month

This month, September 15-October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage month.

The 15 th of the month was selected as the beginning of the celebration because that is that date that Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua achieved independence. Mexico became independent on September 16 th and Chile on September 18 th. This year’s theme is “Hispanic Americans Strong and Colorful Threads in the American Fabric”.

An excellent resource for Extension Educators who work with Spanish speaking populations is Extensión en Español, a web site dedicated to providing information written by Extension professionals from across the country in Spanish and English. To check out this web site go to http://extensionenespanol.net/. A second resource to look at is http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/rdrr99/, which takes you to the document, “New Patterns of Hispanic Settlement in Rural America”.

Take this short quiz to test your knowledge of Hispanic history and culture. Questions came from the book, Brain Quest. Hispanic America that can be purchased through Amazon.com. An awesome prize awaits any individual or group who sends the correct answers to me by the end of Hispanic Heritage Month on October 15. Good Luck and have fun.
